Community Engagement

From January through April 2015, we held more than twenty small and large group discussions related to the George Street Overpass project.

These community conversations were organized to inform our community about this exciting public art initiative, and also to ask for their input. The sessions ranged from neighborhood residents gathering in community centers and artist studios, to adult education and high school art classes, and to a large Community Conversation at the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council Visitor Center.

We asked: What do you want the selected artists to understand about Pawtucket…the people here…the character of our city? What matters to us? What do you want those driving on 95, or walking over the George Street Overpass to think/feel as they encounter the George Street Overpass?

We heard comments that expressed the duality inherent in Pawtucket.
A strong connection to the past and a desire to look ahead.
The diversity of our people and oneness in shared goals.
Edgy urban character and a love for our rivers and natural environment.
The focus on our close-knit resident community and welcoming outsiders.

Thank you to our participants!
